ValuesVenture Principles

ValuesVenture is committed to protecting you and your family's personal information when you are using ValuesVenture services. We want our services to be safe and enjoyable environments for our audience.

ValuesVenture fully subscribes to two major voluntary codes of principles established by the Singapore Government related bodies relating to data protection and privacy in the Internet. They are:

I. Industry Content Code for the Internet

developed by the National Internet Advisory Committee of Singapore, which sets out guidelines for Internet service and content providers in Singapore when providing content on their services. The main scope of the Code is to protect young people and public morality.

For information for users and parents on the Code, click www.mda.gov.sg/wms.www/mediani.aspx or a linked attached softcopy: Industry Content Code.

II. Model Data Protection Code for the Private Sector

developed by the National Trust Council of the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, which sets out the minimum requirements for the protection of personal data in the private sector in Singapore. The Model Code is modelled on the internationally recognized standards for the electronic data protection of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Guidelines. The Model Code sets out 11 data protection principles of (1) accountability; (2) identifying purposes; (3) consent; (4) limiting collection; (5) limiting use, disclosure and retention; (6) accuracy; (7) safeguards; (8) openness; (9) individual access and correction; (10) challenging compliance; and (11) transborder data flows.

For information for users and parents on the Model Code, click www.mda.gov.sg/wms.www/mediani.aspx or a linked attached softcopy: Report on a Model Data Protection Code for the Private Sector.

As far as possible, ValuesVenture endeavours, to the best of its ability, to apply these abovementioned codes of principles into its best practices for its standard operating procedures. In the case where there may be variance from the principles, it would be due to operational resource limitations, with minimal impact on data protection.

1. What information may ValuesVenture collect about you?

When you sign up to participate in or receive a service from any ValuesVenture website, such as newsletters, competitions, live chats, message boards or register with the single universal online registration system used across different parts of the ValuesVenture.com website, we may ask for personal information about you. This can consist of information such as your name, email address, postal address, telephone or mobile number or date of birth. Different webpages may ask for different personal information.

By entering your details in the fields requested, you enable ValuesVenture and its service providers to provide you with the services you select.

Please note that sometimes on particular webpages we will require you to provide additional personal information, and sometimes sensitive personal information (e.g. if you're a ValuesVenture community blogger or article contributor, we may need to know your political leanings). When we do this, we will specify further on these webpages why we are collecting your information and how we will use it.

ValuesVenture also uses cookies (see paragraph 6 et al below for details) and collects IP addresses (an IP address is a number that can uniquely identify a specific computer or other network device on the internet). We use analysis software to look at IP addresses and cookies for the purpose of enhancing your user experience. This information is not used to develop a personal profile of you and the log files are regularly purged.

We also use your IP address to determine whether you are accessing the services from Singapore, Asia or not. If not, you will be re-directed to the international version of the ValuesVenture.com website (see paragraph 7 for details.)

2. How will ValuesVenture use the information we collect about you?

ValuesVenture will use your personal information for a number of purposes including the following:

* for service administration purposes, which means that ValuesVenture may contact you for reasons related to the service you have signed up for, as set out in paragraph 3 below (e.g. to provide you with password reminders or to notify you that a particular service has been suspended for maintenance);
* to contact you about a submission you have made to the websites, including any User Submission Content you provide;
* to personalise the way ValuesVenture content is presented to you;
* IP addresses are used to identify the location of users, the number of visits from different countries and also to block disruptive use;
* to analyse and improve the services offered on ValuesVenture website (e.g. to provide you with the most user-friendly navigation experience); and
* as part of our continuous research into trends on youth learning preferences and relationship with new media (e.g. to refine our model for online values education).

Where ValuesVenture proposes using your personal information for any other uses we will ensure that we notify you first. You will also be given the opportunity to withhold or withdraw your consent for your use other than as listed above.

3. When may ValuesVenture use your details to contact you?

ValuesVenture may contact you:

* in relation to the functioning of any service you have signed up for in order to ensure that ValuesVenture can deliver the services to you;
* where you have opted to receive further correspondence;
* in relation to any contribution you have made to ValuesVenture website, e.g. on ValuesVenture message boards;
* to invite you to participate in surveys about ValuesVenture services which is always on a voluntary basis; and
* for marketing purposes where you have specifically agreed to this (see paragraph 3.1 below)

Local webpages will give you detailed information about how ValuesVenture will contact you in relation to specific services.

3.1 Will I be contacted for marketing purposes?

ValuesVenture would not contact you for marketing purposes, or promote new services to you unless you specifically agree to be contacted for these purposes.

4. Will ValuesVenture share my personal information with anyone else?

We will keep your information confidential except where disclosure is required or permitted by law (for example to government bodies and law enforcement agencies) or as described in paragraph 5 et al below. Generally, we will only use your information within ValuesVenture. However, sometimes ValuesVenture uses third party service providers to process your information. ValuesVenture will require these third parties to comply strictly with its instructions and ValuesVenture will require that they do not use your personal information for their own business purposes.

5. The choices you can make regarding the information (personal or otherwise) you provide to ValuesVenture.

5.1 Offensive or inappropriate content on ValuesVenture website

If you post or send offensive, inappropriate or objectionable content anywhere on or to ValuesVenture website, or otherwise engage in any disruptive behaviour on ValuesVenture website, ValuesVenture may use your personal information to stop such behaviour.

Where ValuesVenture reasonably believes that you are or may be in breach of any of the laws of Singapore (e.g. because the content you have posted may be defamatory), ValuesVenture may use your personal information to inform relevant third parties such as your employer, school, youth organization/institution, e-mail/Internet provider or law enforcement agencies about the content and your behaviour.

5.2 What if you are a user aged 14 or under?

If you are under the age of 14, and not registering under any Partner Organisation (i.e. as approved by ValuesVenture), please get your parent/guardian's permission beforehand whenever you provide personal information to ValuesVenture's website. Users without this consent are not allowed to provide us with personal information.

5.3 How long will ValuesVenture keep my personal information?

We will hold your personal information on our systems for as long as is necessary for the relevant service, or as long as is set out in any relevant contract you hold with ValuesVenture, including the Terms of Use. In the case that you wish to cancel your registration as a ValuesVenture registered member, once an account is deleted a red flag goes on the database and, while people cannot use the personal information, it may stay on the system for administration purposes, before being deleted automatically especially if a user is registered under a Partner Organisation.

Where you contribute to ValuesVenture, we may choose to only keep your content for as long as is reasonably required for the purpose(s) for which it was submitted in order to minimise data bloat and associated hosting costs. For example, ValuesVenture may only keep copies of entries to a widget competition for the duration of the competition. However, we reserve the right to house most projects for a longer, or even permanent, duration at our sole discretion, especially in view of the collaborative nature of projects undertaken through ValuesVenture.

ValuesVenture as a socially-oriented enterprise with public sector partners also has an obligation to record snapshots of history which may include some User Submission Content i.e. content provided by users. Therefore, some content submitted to or shared by you with ValuesVenture may be retained for prolonged periods of time or potentially indefinitely in ValuesVenture's Archive, which is true of News contributions which are published. There may also be rare instances where we will share your contribution with third parties in the interests of maintaining historical archives (e.g. contributions about people's experiences in World War II). Where possible, we will endeavour to inform you upfront or let you know at a later date where we are likely to keep content indefinitely or pass it onto any approved historical archive.

5.4 Can you find out what personal information ValuesVenture holds about you?

You have the right to request a copy of the personal information ValuesVenture holds about you and to have any inaccuracies corrected. (We charge SGD$30.00 for information requests and will require you to prove your identity with 2 pieces of approved photographic identification.) We will use reasonable efforts to supply, correct or delete personal information about you on our files.

6. The use of cookies on the ValuesVenture website

6.1 What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small amount of data, which often includes a unique identifier that is sent to your computer or mobile phone (referred to here as a "device") browser from a website's computer and is stored on your device's hard drive. Each website can send its own cookie to your browser if your browser's preferences allow it, but (to protect your privacy) your browser only permits a website to access the cookies it has already sent to you, not the cookies sent to you by other sites. Many sites do this whenever a user visits their website in order to track online traffic flows.

Cookies record information about your online preferences and allow us to tailor the websites to your interests. Users have the opportunity to set their devices to accept all cookies, to notify them when a cookie is issued, or not to receive cookies at any time. The last of these means that certain personalised services cannot then be provided to that user and accordingly you may not be able to take full advantage of all of the ValuesVenture.com features. Each browser is different, so check the "Help" menu of your browser to learn how to change your cookie preferences.

During the course of any visit to ValuesVenture website, the webpages you see, along with a cookie, are downloaded to your device. Many websites do this, because cookies enable website publishers to do useful things like find out whether the device (and probably its user) has visited the website before. This is done on a repeat visit by checking to see, and finding, the cookie left there on the last visit.

6.2 How does ValuesVenture use cookies?

Information supplied by cookies can help us to analyse the profile of our visitors and help us to provide you with a better user experience. For example: if on a previous visit you went to our education pages, we might find this out from your cookie and highlight educational information on your second and subsequent visits.

ValuesVenture may use independent measurement and research companies to gather information regarding the visitors to ValuesVenture and licensee sites on our behalf using cookies, log file data and code which is embedded on our website. ValuesVenture will use this type of information to help improve the services it provides to its users and/or for approved research. Apart from ValuesVenture management and its affiliates, ValuesVenture strictly requires that third parties do not use any information for their own business or other purposes (see paragraph 4 above). Certain other areas of ValuesVenture.com may use cookies for a specific reason - for example, to help an online game work effectively on your device. If this is the case, the local terms for that area of the website will make this clear and you should refer to those local terms for additional information.

7. What if you are accessing ValuesVenture websites outside Singapore?

www.ValuesVenture.com is published in Singapore by Raison Consulting Pte Ltd. For international users accessing the site from outside Singapore, the Website is made available to you by Raison Consulting Pte Ltd. As this may be operated on a partly commercial basis some of the webpages you access will have advertising on them, under license from ValuesVenture. However all personal information submitted by you to the site goes directly to ValuesVenture and will be processed in accordance with this Privacy Policy (and any local terms that apply on the websites) unless terms on sites specify otherwise.

You should note that ValuesVenture does place a number of cookies on www.ValuesVenture.com and may collect information about international users from these - please see paragraph 6 et al above for more information about cookies.

8. In the Event of Acquisition, Merger, Sale or Bankruptcy

In the event that ValuesVenture is acquired by or merged with a third party entity, we reserve the right, in any of these circumstances, to transfer or assign the data information we have collected from our users as part of such merger, acquisition, sale, or other change of control. In the unlikely event of our bankruptcy, insolvency, reorganization, receivership, or assignment for the benefit of creditors, or the application of laws or equitable principles affecting creditors' rights generally, we may not be able to control how your personal data information is treated, transferred, or used.

9. Changes to ValuesVenture Privacy Policy

Your use of ValuesVenture, and any disputes arising from it, is subject to this Privacy Policy as well as our Terms of Use and all of its dispute resolution provisions including arbitration, limitation on damages and choice of law. We reserve the right to change our Privacy Policy and our Terms of Use at any time. If we make changes, we will post them and will indicate at the top of this page the policy's new effective date. We encourage you to refer to this policy on an ongoing basis so that you understand our current privacy policy. Unless stated otherwise, our current privacy policy applies to all information that we have about you and your account.
